Election Day

Tuesday, November 4th

I cast my ballot on October 22nd as Colorado allows ‘early’ voting and ‘mail in’ voting.  For me,  Election Day 2008 was all about waiting.  I spent most of the afternoon pacing.  I certainly don’t need to go over the significant and historical events of the day.  You were there.  You experienced it first hand.  Maybe you were disappointed, maybe elated.  Regardless, we are embarking on a new era with a new leader.  Perhaps it’s good and perhaps it’s bad.  Only time will tell… But I’m certainly optimistic.

I joined an election party once I’d finished work.  I couldn’t get there until after 6:00 (Pacific) so I’d already missed a great deal of the fun.  At this point, most of the Eastern states had confirmed our next President.  California and New York were assumed, so once Florida and Ohio turned blue it was over.  Our group of ten raised a glass and watched as McCain conceded and Obama artfully claimed victory.

San Francisco is notoriasly liberal so the parties were everywhere.  There were mixed emotions for many however…  A measure specific to California was also on the line – Proposition 8.  The initiative banned gay marriage and was hotly disputed across the relatively ‘gay friendly’ state.   And so, it was with some difficulty that many San Franciscans revelled the new President elect as the gay community had simultaneously taken a step backward
