Monday, October 27th
This is a day like any other in my regular pursuit of happiness. Clearly it’s not a San Francisco moment as I’m travelling for work but it’s a day in the journey. My things are in San Francisco and I pay rent there… which frustrates me…
San Francisco spreads over 49 square miles and is built on 43 hills. But anyone who lives there knows that only a small portion of that space matters… Further, one can quickly assess your “type” by where you live within those 49 square miles. My address sits on the cusp of two neighborhoods. Walk three blocks to the west and you’re in Lower Pacific Heights. Walk three to the east and you’re in Russian Hill. Both are considered “good” neighborhoods in the minds of local. Of course, walk three blocks north and you’re in the Marina (Stone scoffs at this area as “it’s filled with the ‘Bridge and Tunnel’ crowd at night”).
This three block concept is very San Francisco. Despite it’s relatively small land size and population of approximately 800,000 people, the city boasts 107 unique neighborhoods!! To compare, Atlanta is 132 square miles and has 57 distinct neighborhoods. Denver is 155 square miles and contains 92 neighborhoods. Dallas is 385 square miles and maintains 139 neighborhoods.
